You'll often see "12 to 15 years" quoted as the beagle lifespan. The best recent evidence is a little lower, and more interesting.

In a 2025 Royal Veterinary College VetCompass study of UK pet beagles, 322 beagles died during the study period. Their median age at death was 11.28 years, with the middle half of dogs dying between about 9.3 and 13.1 years old.

Males vs females

Median age at death Middle 50% of dogs Dogs
Overall 11.28 years 9.32 to 13.08 322
Females 11.70 years 9.82 to 13.43 151
Males 10.75 years 8.88 to 12.65 169

Females lived roughly a year longer. The paper doesn't establish why, so treat this as an observation rather than a rule for any one dog.

Read the number carefully

Two caveats matter when you see this figure quoted.

  1. It's a median, from dogs that died during the study. It's not a promise for a puppy born today. Half the dogs lived past 11.3 years, and a meaningful number lived well beyond 13.
  2. It's UK primary-care data. Beagles in other countries, working packs, and lab-bred dogs may differ. The WSAVA breed profile says beagles "may live to 13 years or older", which fits the upper end of the range seen here.

Many online pages quote lifespans with no source. If you're citing a number, prefer one with a study behind it.

What do beagles die of?

For the 296 deaths with a recorded cause:

  • Cancer: 19.3%
  • Lumps or masses: 13.2%
  • Poor quality of life: 12.8%
  • Brain disorders: 6.8%
  • Kidney disorders: 6.8%

A separate analysis the WSAVA cites, of insured Swedish beagles, found injury (especially being hit by vehicles) and epilepsy were the most frequent causes of death, and that injury risk for beagles was over 2.5 times the all-breed rate. A scent-driven dog that runs off after a trail is a road risk, which is one reason recall and secure fencing matter (see our training videos).

What owners can actually influence

A beagle on a long line exploring a field

You can't change genetics, but the study's most common diagnoses point to levers you do control.

  • Weight. Obesity was the most common diagnosis at 24.3% of beagles, and it also raises the risk of disc disease. Keeping a beagle lean is the single most practical thing you can do. See how much a beagle should weigh.
  • Teeth. Gum disease affected 17.8% of beagles. Regular brushing and vet dental checks help.
  • Roadside safety. Use a long line or a secure fence. A beagle with its nose down isn't listening.
  • Routine vet visits. Because cancer and masses together account for about a third of deaths with a recorded cause, checking lumps early and seeing your vet about any new one is sensible.
  • Know your puppy's parents. Lafora disease and a few other inherited conditions have DNA tests; ask the breeder.

Senior beagles

Portrait of a senior beagle with a gray muzzle

One breed-specific guide counts a beagle as a senior from about 9 years old. In the VetCompass sample, 13.1% of beagles were 9 to under 12, and 5.4% were 12 or older, so seniors are a minority of the pet beagle population. From around that age, many vets suggest twice-yearly checkups, closer attention to weight and mobility, and bloodwork. Ask your own vet what they recommend.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average lifespan of a beagle? In the largest recent UK study, the median age at death was 11.28 years.

Do female beagles live longer than males? In that study, yes: about 11.7 years versus 10.75 years, a difference of almost a year.

Can a beagle live to 15? It's possible but at the long end. In the study, the oldest quarter of dogs died at about 13.1 years or later.

Do pocket or smaller beagles live longer? We found no good evidence either way, so we wouldn't make that claim.
