Pet websites commonly say an adult beagle weighs 20 to 30 pounds. Real-world records tell a different story. In the 2025 Royal Veterinary College VetCompass study, the median adult beagle weighed 18.19 kg (about 40 lb).
What UK vet records show
| Median adult weight | Middle 50% of dogs | |
|---|---|---|
| All beagles | 18.19 kg / 40.1 lb | 15.68 to 21.07 kg / 34.6 to 46.5 lb |
| Males | 19.70 kg / 43.4 lb | 17.26 to 22.44 kg / 38.1 to 49.5 lb |
| Females | 16.59 kg / 36.6 lb | 14.48 to 18.97 kg / 31.9 to 41.8 lb |
Males ran more than 3 kg (about 7 lb) heavier than females.
Part of the gap with the "20 to 30 lb" figure is that some online guides describe the smaller 13-inch variety, and part is that so many pet beagles are overweight: obesity was the most common diagnosis in the study, at 24.3% of beagles. Because the median includes those dogs, a typical weight is not the same as a healthy weight.
Weight is only half the story: height
The AKC standard defines two sizes by height at the shoulder, not weight: a 13-inch variety (not over 13 inches) and a 15-inch variety (over 13 but not over 15). Anything taller than 15 inches is disqualified from showing. A 15-inch beagle will naturally weigh more than a 13-inch one. We cover that in 13-inch vs 15-inch beagles.
So what's the right weight for your beagle?
There isn't one number. Vets use a body condition score (a 1 to 9 or 1 to 5 scale based on what they can see and feel) rather than the scale alone. You can do a rough check at home:
- Ribs: you should feel them easily under a thin layer of fat, like the back of your hand, without pressing hard.
- Waist: viewed from above, there should be a visible narrowing behind the ribs.
- Tummy: viewed from the side, the belly should tuck up toward the hind legs.
If you can't feel ribs or see a waist, your beagle is likely carrying extra weight. Confirm with your vet and ask them for a target weight for your dog.
Why beagles gain weight so easily
The breed was developed as a pack scent hound, and the WSAVA lists obesity as a predisposition. Beagles are famously food-motivated. The risk isn't only appearance: the WSAVA notes that excess weight also increases the risk of disc disease in this breed, and the VetCompass authors recommend good weight control to prevent or reduce obesity. Feeding without guesswork
We deliberately don't give a single calorie number, because online ones vary wildly (we found guides suggesting anywhere from a couple of hundred to more than a thousand calories a day for similar dogs). Instead:
- Start from the food label and your vet's target weight, not your dog's current weight.
- Measure every meal with a proper measuring cup or kitchen scale. Scoops drift.
- Count treats. A common guideline is to keep treats to a small share of daily food; your vet can say how much for your dog. Use part of the daily meal for training rewards.
- Split into two meals and avoid free-feeding. Beagles will eat whatever is left out.
- Reweigh every 2 to 4 weeks and adjust by small amounts.
- Make food a puzzle. Snuffle mats, lick mats, and scatter feeding use the nose, which suits the breed.
Puppies and seniors
Puppies need more calories per pound than adults and shouldn't be put on a diet without vet advice. Many guides describe seniors as 9 years and up, who often need fewer calories. Your vet can adjust for each stage.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a full-grown beagle weigh? The median adult in UK vet records was about 40 lb (18.2 kg), but a healthy beagle's weight depends on its height and build.
How heavy is a 13-inch beagle? We didn't find a reliable published figure that separates the varieties, so ask your vet for a target weight.
Is my beagle fat or just big-boned? Feel for ribs and look for a waist. A vet can score it in seconds.
How fast should an overweight beagle lose weight? Gradually and under veterinary guidance.
