Why Walking Your Dog After 4 PM Could Be Causing A

Many beagle owners find themselves walking their dogs after work, often at dusk or in the dark. While it may seem convenient, this routine can trigger fear and anxiety in beagles—and in many other breeds as well. The sudden exposure to low light and unfamiliar sounds floods the dog’s body with stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones prepare the heart, lungs, and muscles for fight or flight, but when they remain elevated, they can alter brain chemistry, leading to anxiety disorders, guarding, and heightened startle responses.

Because the stress hormones linger for hours, repeated late‑night walks can damage a beagle’s mental and physical health, increasing the risk of heart disease, liver strain, and a shortened lifespan. The video recommends avoiding evening walks altogether and instead scheduling two longer walks on the weekend, one of which can be off‑leash in a safe area. For weekdays when work prevents a walk, consider hiring a dog walker a few times a week. Most importantly, give your beagle ample downtime and sleep to reset the overstimulation and keep them calm and healthy.
